Tips:

  • Be sure to access PubMed from a library page or via the 'go' link [go/pubmed (on campus) or http://go.middlebury.edu/pubmed (off-campus)].  This will prompt PubMed to link its results to Middlebury collections and our interlibrary loan form.
  • For a more precise search, try the Advanced Search Form.  (This might prevent PubMed from linking its resuls to our collections.)
  • If you wish to search for a phrase, enter it without quotation marks so that PubMed's  Automatic Term Mapping (ATM) feature will be activated.  If the ATM does not produce useful results then instruct PubMed to bypass ATM for your phrase by enclosing it in quotation marks  " ".
  • PubMed automatically places the AND operator between your search terms. When you want to be sure the correct Boolean operator (AND, OR, NOT) is used, enter it in uppercase.
  • Truncation turns off ATM and the automatic addition of MeSH terms. For example, heart attack* will not prompt a search for the MeSH term Myocardial Infarction.
  • To focus your search by using controlled vocabulary, consult the MeSH Database.
  • To limit your search results to review articles, click on the "Review" tab on your search results page.
  • To limit your search results to articles about the history of medicine, click on the "Limits" tab under the search window and select "History of Medicine" in the "Subsets" window.

ChemIDplus Lite Unrestricted Resource Some full text available Resource contains images

From the National Library of Medicine (NLM), ChemIDplus provides basic information about substances cited in NLM databases such as PubMed.  There are over 70 chemical resources monitored in ChemIDplus. ChemIDplus Lite and Advanced are two different applications of the ChemIDplus database. Lite is designed for simple searching on name or registry number to retrieve basic information about a chemical and provide links to other resources.  The Lite version displays structures, but does not allow drawing or searching on structures. ChemIDplus Advanced is designed for more advanced searching on any combination of name, registry number, molecular formula, classification code, locator code, toxicity, physical property, structure, or molecular weight. Toxicity and physical property data are displayed in tables under Basic Information.  The Advanced version provides links to the same resources as the Lite version. In addition, ChemIDplus Advanced allows users to draw their own structures and perform similarity and substructure searches.

The NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Chemistry WebBook provides access to chemical and physical property data for chemical species through the internet. The data provided in the site are from collections maintained by the NIST Standard Reference Data Program and outside contributors. Data in the WebBook system are organized by chemical species. The WebBook system allows users to search for chemical species by various means. Once the desired species has been identified, the system will display data for the species.

  • PubMed automatically places the AND operator between your search terms. When you want to be sure the correct Boolean operator (AND, OR, NOT) is used, enter it in uppercase.
  • Truncation turns off ATM and the automatic addition of MeSH terms. For example, heart attack* will not prompt a search for the MeSH term Myocardial Infarction.
  • To focus your search by using controlled vocabulary, consult the MeSH Database.
  • To limit your search results to review articles, click on the "Review" tab on your search results page.
  • To limit your search results to articles about the history of medicine, click on the "Limits" tab under the search window and select "History of Medicine" in the "Subsets" window.
